BB-1 Blade Blocker (for walk behinds) instructions. Generation 2, post-Spring '05)
Blade Blocker is designed to be installed on walk behind mowers in order to temporarily block the bulk of
grass discharged thus preventing it from blowing into pools, flower beds etc. Blade Blocker is designed to
work in conjunction with the factory discharge shield and must be installed in order to do so. Fig 2 shows a
Blade Blocker installed on a typical walk behind mower. Fig. 3 is a complete, assembled Blade Blocker less the
mower. Figs 1,6,5 and 4 are close ups. The baffle material is an extremely durable high density polyethylene
that needs to be cut to size in order to cover the discharge opening. Just about any type saw will work
including a carpenters hand saw or hack saw. Using four 5/16" bolts and lock nuts attach the baffle to the
opening using the hinge. IMPORTANT: The baffle must be attached to the side of the hinge that has the round
tube attached to it. The other side of the hinge will be attached to the mower deck. It might be necessary
to notch the discharge shield. See fig 4. Attach the u-joint to the straight end of the control rod using a
one inch roll pin. Install the friction pad, tension plate, locking collars, spring and grip as shown in fig
#1. Attach the friction pad using the 10-32 machine screws, washers and lock nuts. After tightening the upper
locking collar push the bottom collar up to compress the spring then tighten collar in place. Typically the spring
will need to be close to fully compressed in order to provide the friction needed to hold the baffle in position.
Next slide the U-joint onto the tubing protruding from the rear of the hinge. (Do not permanently attach at this
point)
The upper end of the control rod must now positioned then attached to the mower near the control panel. Once the
location has
been chosen the perforated aluminum straps can be used to attach the Tension/mounting plate to the mower. The straps are
designed to be bent and/or twisted in order to facilitate attachment. "U" bolts are provided to aid in attaching straps to
round shapes such as handlebars. The tension plate must remain at a 90 degree angle to the control rod on all planes in
order to provide adequate friction between the friction pad and locking collar. IMPORTANT: Be certain that the Blade Blocker
does not in any way interfere with any part of the mowers controls in any of it's operating positions. Position the control
rod handle in the desired position taking into consideration both the open and closed positions of the handle and the baffle
and then using the hole in the u-joint as a guide drill a ¼" hole thru the tube on the hinge and attach with a ¼" roll pin.
When properly installed and adjusted the baffle can be rotated up/open (from the closed position) until it is flush with
discharge shield allowing grass to be discharged normally. When transporting the mower with the shield raised the
baffle can be rotated fully open past the vertical
